Board Member Hyland Hears Broad Range of Perspectives During Outreach Task Force
Meetings in Cincinnati and Boston
April 25, 2007 - National Credit Union Administration (NCUA) Board Member Gigi Hyland hosted the first two of six Outreach Task Force Meetings last week in Cincinnati, OH and Boston, MA. The creation of the Outreach Task Force is in further response to the findings in NCUA's Member Service Assessment Pilot Program (MSAP) which was issued in November, 2006. The purpose of the town hall meetings is to gather input and ideas from credit unions, credit union leagues, and other interested parties on the recommendations from the MSAP.
At the outset of the meeting, Board Member Hyland provided background information to the attendees and assured them that their contributions would be crucial to the deliberations of the Task Force, as it has made no decisions on any of the issues under consideration. Active participation of the audience was encouraged throughout the meetings. Attendees were assigned tables to discuss a variety of questions that focused on the challenges and opportunities surrounding credit union service to low income individuals, as well as whether data should be collected on executive compensation. Each table recorded their ideas and responses to their discussion, which was then synthesized and reported to the entire audience, who also were given a chance to discuss each question with all the attendees. The topics discussed during the meetings included: NCUA programs and processes to encourage outreach to underserved communities; value of low-income designation; NCUA role in encouraging outreach to underserved; data collection on member income; and data collection on executive compensation.
"The Outreach Task Force Meetings are intended to allow the credit union community, as well as any other party wishing to participate, the opportunity to share their voice with the regulator, and the recent meetings in Cincinnati and Boston accomplished just that," stated Board Member Hyland. "The format of the meetings allowed the audience to share their insights and concerns. I listened attentively to all of them and am sharing with NCUA the valuable information gained from the meetings. I look forward to the remaining meetings scheduled and the excellent dialogue that will occur."
The next Outreach Task Force Meeting is scheduled for Wednesday, June 6, in New Orleans, LA. For a complete schedule and to register for future meetings, please visit the NCUA website at: http://www.ncua.gov/TH-Outreach/Index.htm
