NCUA Hosts First Access Across America
Summit of 2006

Alexandria, VA, April 12, 2006 – National Credit Union Administration (NCUA) hosted the first Access Across America Economic Empowerment Summit of 2006 in Dallas, TX.  Credit union officials in Texas and surrounding states were invited to attend the free one-day summit.
Access Across America was established to promote partnership opportunities with federal agencies and facilitate the extension of affordable financial services to individuals, communities and underserved areas across America.

NCUA Chairman JoAnn Johnson and Vice Chairman Hood both delivered remarks and met with participants during the event, while HUD Deputy Assistant Secretary for Grant Programs, Ms. Anna Marie Farias served as the Keynote speaker.

“I commend all of those who attended the Access Across America summit in Dallas,” said Chairman Johnson.  “The strong turnout of over 125 guests confirms that credit unions remain dedicated and steadfast in their effort to help their members achieve the American dream.”
The summit consisted of panel discussions which highlighted resources available to credit unions in order to expand financial services to their members by partnering with other federal agencies and non-profit organizations.

The featured panels included:

• Member Business Lending
• Homeownership
• Health Savings Accounts
• Serving Underserved Areas

Participating agencies included the Department of Agriculture, Housing and Urban Development, Treasury, and the U.S.Small Business Administration. Also presenting were the Texas Credit Union League, Neighborworks America, Texans Credit Union, El Paso Affordable Housing CUSO, and Covenant Savings Federal Credit Union.

“These panels covered issues that are very important to credit unions and promoted thoughtful discussion between the panelists and the guests,” said Chairman Johnson. “I was encouraged that many people asked thoughtful questions and were equipped with practical knowledge and resources to better serve their members.”

The National Credit Union Administration, governed by a three-member board, is the independent federal agency that charters and supervises federal credit unions. NCUA, with the backing of the full faith and credit of the U.S. government, operates the National Credit Union Share Insurance Fund (NCUSIF), insuring the savings of 82 million account holders in all federal credit unions and many state-chartered credit unions.
