Vice Chairman Hood Appointed to
Serve as a Member of the Federal Communications Commission’s (FCC) Advisory Committee
on
Diversity for Communications in the Digital Age
December 18, 2006, Alexandria, VA – National Credit Union Administration (NCUA) Vice Chairman Rodney E. Hood was appointed by Federal Communications Commission Chairman, Kevin J. Martin to serve as a Member of the FCC’s Advisory Committee on Diversity for Communications in the Digital Age. The objective of this Committee is to grow and continue to provide services needed by the American people, paying particular attention to the strength and vibrancy of diversity, thus creating an environment where all Americans have access to opportunities to participate in the communications industry.
Under the Communications Act, the FCC is responsible for making “available, so far as possible, to all people of the United States, without discrimination on the basis of race, color, religion, national origin, or sex, a rapid, efficient, Nation-wide wire and radio service…” 47 U.S.C.§151. This Diversity Committee is being formed to ensure that the FCC regulates the communications industry in a manner consistent with its goals.
The mission of the Advisory Committee for Diversity in the Digital Age is “to make recommendations to the Federal Communications Commission regarding policies and practices that will further enhance the ability of minorities and women to participate in the telecommunications and related industries.” Among the topics to be considered by the Diversity Committee are following:
- financial issues, such as access to capital;
- transactional transparency and related outreach;
- career advancement; and
- the impact of new emerging technologies on diversity issues.
“I am honored to join such a distinguished committee of accomplished individuals and welcome the opportunity to serve the FCC and the American people,” said Hood. The Diversity Committee is Chaired by Henry Rivera, Vice Chairman of the Board of Directors for the Emma Bowen Foundation for Minority Interest in Media. Vice Chairman Hood will attend his first meeting of the Committee on December 21, 2006. “I look forward to contributing toward the committee’s noble mission,” said Hood.
The National Credit Union Administration is the independent federal agency that regulates, charters and supervises federal credit unions. NCUA, with the backing of the full faith and credit of the U.S. government, also operates and manages the National Credit Union Share Insurance Fund (NCUSIF), insuring the deposits of over 85 million account holders in all federal credit unions and the majority of state-chartered credit union.
