NCUA Continues Effort in
Response to Hurricane Katrina
Agency coordinates with federal government, trade associations
and leagues to assist credit union members
Alexandria, Va, September 1, 2005---NCUA Chairman JoAnn Johnson and Board Member Matz announced this afternoon that the agency continues to respond to the needs of credit unions and their members in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina.
The agency is coordinating with federal agencies, trade associations, State Supervisory Authorities, state credit union leagues and vendors in an effort to ensure credit unions become operational as soon as feasible. NCUA officials have had success in contacting a number of the credit unions in the affected areas and some have opened alternative locations.
“We are receiving numerous phone calls, primarily from members, inquiring about the status of their credit union. We are organizing our resources to establish back-up teams to be launched into the affected areas,” stated NCUA Chairman JoAnn Johnson.
Credit union members are encouraged to go to www.ncua.gov for updates, call the toll-free number, or e-mail. Should the need arise for a returned phone call, please leave a non-cell phone number if possible, as cell phone service is limited.
"It is critical to ensure that credit union members have access to their money," emphasized Board Member Matz. "NCUA is committed to doing everything we can, working with credit unions, trade associations and vendors to meet the members' financial needs during this extraordinary crisis."
