Matz Announces Summer PALS Workshop to Help Credit Unions “Knock Out Predatory Lenders
and Improve Your Bottom Line”

Free PALS Workshop July 7 in Baltimore, Maryland
– and an opportunity to see some great baseball!

March 14, 2005, Baltimore, Md. – NCUA Board Member Debbie Matz has scheduled a free Partnering and Leadership Successes (PALS) workshop entitled “Knock Out Predatory Lenders and Improve Your Bottom Line.” It will be held on July 7 in Baltimore.

In making this announcement, Matz said, “This Summer PALS workshop will demonstrate how credit unions can compete head-to-head against predatory lenders and win. By providing affordable alternatives to predatory lending, credit unions can win over loyal new members, strengthen their earnings, and knock out competitors who are making a fortune by preying upon potential members.”

At the workshop, panels of credit union leaders will share their best practices in attracting members who previously relied on check-cashers, payday lenders, pawn shops and other predatory lenders to meet their cash needs. “There are many shining examples of credit unions providing emergency loans, financial education, and other needed services to help new members break free from the grip of predatory lenders,” Matz observed. “These credit unions have found that it’s not only the right thing to do – it’s good business.”

To register for the Summer PALS workshop, visit http://www.ncua.gov and click “PALS Workshop Registration, July 7, 2005.” Officials from large and small credit unions, federal and state credit unions, are all invited to attend. Networking opportunities will be available during check-in and lunch.

The free workshop will take place from 10 AM – 3:30 PM at the Hyatt Regency on Baltimore’s Inner Harbor, just a few blocks from Oriole Park at Camden Yards. The first 60 people who register through NCUA’s website can get a discounted room rate at the Hyatt for the evenings of July 6 and/or July 7.

An added bonus: Workshop attendees may run across Boston Red Sox players, who will be staying at the Hyatt while playing a four-game series with the Baltimore Orioles. The first pitch is at 7 PM on July 7. For tickets to the Red Sox-Orioles games, contact Rick Webb, CEO of Atlantic Financial Federal Credit Union in Baltimore at (410) 584-7474 ext. 223, or rwebb@affcu.org.

The PALS workshop in Baltimore will be co-hosted by the Maryland, Virginia, D.C., Delaware and Massachusetts Credit Union Leagues, Pennsylvania Credit Union Association, National Association of Federal Credit Unions, and National Federation of Community Development Credit Unions.

A public service veteran of 25 years, Matz was named as a recess appointee to the NCUA Board in January 2002 and nominated to a seat on the Board on February 27, 2002. The U.S. Senate confirmed her on March 22, 2002. As part of the NCUA Board, Matz oversees the regulation of federal credit unions and the administration of the federal insurance fund covering approximately 9,300 credit unions in the U.S.

Matz is a member of three credit unions and resides in McLean, Va. with her husband and two children. Before her appointment to the NCUA Board, Matz was appointed by President Clinton as Deputy Assistant Secretary for Administration in the Department of Agriculture.
