NCUA to Host Access Across America Workshop
at CUNA GAC
Alexandria, VA, February 15, 2005 – The National Credit Union Administration (NCUA) will present the Credit Union National Association’s Governmental Affairs Conference (CUNA GAC) attendees with the opportunity to attend an Access Across America Economic Empowerment workshop on Sunday, February 27th, from 3:00 to 5:00 pm in the Jefferson Room at the Washington Hilton.
NCUA has prepared an agenda specifically focused on federal government partnerships. Representatives from the NCUA, Department of the Treasury and the Small Business Administration will be discussing Health Savings Accounts, the New Markets Tax Credit, and Member Business Lending.
“We are pleased to present this Access Across America workshop for the CUNA GAC attendees,” said NCUA Chairman JoAnn Johnson, who will be opening the workshop. “NCUA has hosted several successful Access Across America Economic Empowerment Summits across the United States, however, this forum will provide an opportunity to reach a broader audience. We appreciate CUNA for providing this forum to inform credit unions about the federal resources available to them as they expand their member services.”
Topics include:
Health Savings Accounts (HSAs) are an alternative to traditional health insurance that offers a different way for consumers to pay for their health care. HSAs enable consumers to pay for current health expenses and save for future qualified medical and retiree health expenses on a tax-free basis. A representative from the Department of the Treasury will explain how these accounts can benefit your membership. Maury Pilver with HealthAmerica Credit Union in Jacksonville, Florida, will explain how HealthAmerica has set up HSAs for its membership.
New Markets Tax Credit (NMTC) permits investors to receive a tax credit for making qualified equity investments in designated Community Development Entities (CDEs). Representatives from the Community Development Financial Institutions Fund of the Treasury Department will talk about how credit unions can form partnerships with other entities to reach out to underserved areas. Richard Campbell with Hope Community Credit Union in Jackson, Mississippi, will discuss Hope’s partnership with the Enterprise Corporation of the Delta and their experience with the NMTC.
Member Business Lending is a service that credit unions may offer for their members’ small business needs. Representatives from NCUA and the Small Business Administration will outline the regulations and programs involved with developing a member business lending program, as well as government loan guarantee programs available to credit unions.
The workshop is open to all registered attendees for the CUNA GAC. Space is limited.
The National Credit Union Administration, governed by a three-member board, is the independent federal agency that charters and supervises federal credit unions. NCUA, with the backing of the full faith and credit of the U.S. government, operates the National Credit Union Share Insurance Fund (NCUSIF), insuring the savings of 82 million account holders in all federal credit unions and many state-chartered credit unions.
