Downey Federal Credit Union #11870, with assets of $102,524,237 as of June 2003 serves the community of Downey California

The credit union is working on a project to open a student branch at the local high school.  During the summer, they hired four students and educated them about the credit union philosophy and trained them to open new accounts and process transactions for student members.  The school is providing space on the campus for the branch.  Furniture and equipment has been ordered and the anticipated open date for the branch is October 2003.

Three teachers will be giving the students guidance throughout the day when the branch is opened.  However, credit union staff will be their direct supervisor.  The school district is 100% behind this venture and if all goes well the other high school in Downey wants a branch also.

In addition to the student branch program, the credit union had a ‘thank you’ reception for the membership during the summer.  Management believes this is a small price to pay to thank the membership for their business.
